Alignment of domestic labels
for the EU:
|
SAME FIELD OF VISION |
The EU requires certain mandatory information to appear
in the same field of vision (ie, the bottle need not be turned in order
to view all required information).
This may appear on either the front or back label.
Mandatory information: Alcohol, Volume, Country of Origin, GI
|

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION |
Mandatory if a vintage or variety is claimed. The GI must
be at least twice the height of the importer name and address.
|
|
ALCOHOL STATEMENT |
Format is prescribed as ‘xx.x% vol’ or ‘alc xx.x% vol’.
The statement must be in half or whole units and must be at least 3mm in
height. Note that alcohol statement tolerance is only 0.5% in the EU.
(Maximum alcohol for table wines in the EU is 15.0% vol).

NOMINAL VOLUME |
The volume statement must be at least 4mm for the EU.
|
|
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN |
The country of origin must be in direct conjunction with
the word ‘wine’. Acceptable formats include; ‘Wine of Australia, ‘Wine.
Product of Australia’ or ‘Australian Wine’. |

ALLERGENS |
Only a sulphite declaration is currently required.
‘Contains sulphites’ or ‘contains sulphur dioxide’ are accepted formats,
however, the statement must appear in the official language of the
member state. Allergens (other than sulphites) are exempt from labelling
until November 25 2007. Australian standard drinks are prohibited.

IMPORTER NAME & ADDRESS |
Minimum details required are name, post code and country.
Refer to Geographical Indication for height. |

LOT NUMBER |
Can appear on the label or the bottle. Must be preceded
by the letter L. |

for the USA:

BRAND LABEL |
To comply with the brand label requirement the brand
name, alcohol, designation (ie, variety) and geographical indication
must all appear on the one label. |
|
ALCOHOL STATEMENT |
Format is prescribed as ‘xx.x% alc./vol.’ or ‘alc xx.x%
by vol’. The statement must be between 1-3mm in height.
|
|
NOMINAL VOLUME |
The volume statement must be at least 2mm for the USA.
May appear on front or back label. |
|
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN |
Format not prescribed. May appear on any label.
|
|
GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION |
Mandatory if a vintage is claimed. Multi-GI claims are
not permissible. |
|
VARIETY |
If multiple varieties are claimed the percentage of each
variety must be stated on the label to a total of 100%. There is a 2%
tolerance for quoting each variety. |
|
VINTAGE |
If a vintage is claimed at least 95% of grapes must be
sourced from that vintage year. This criteria is reduced to 85% for
wines described by an Australian state (eg, South Australia, Victoria).

|
GOVERNMENT WARNING |
“Government Warning” must be capitalised and bold. The
statement must be 2mm in height and appear as a continuous paragraph.
May appear on any label. |
|
SULFITE STATEMENT |
Statement is prescribed as ‘contains sulfites’. Must be
at least 2mm in height. May appear on any label. |
|
IMPORTER NAME & ADDRESS |
Minimum details required are name and state. May appear
on any label. |
|
OVERSTICKERS |
The USA does not permit overstickers. The mandatory USA
information may be attached as a third label. |
|

for the Canada:
|
SINGLE FIELD OF VISION |
The Principal Display Panel (PDP) concept no longer
applies. Mandatory information must now appear in a ‘Single Field of
Vision’. Mandatory information must be clearly visible, in the required
formats, sizes and languages, on any panel of the container in a single
field of vision. Mandatory information: Alcohol Statement, Nominal
Volume, Country of Origin, Common Name. |

ALCOHOL STATEMENT |
Format is prescribed. The alcohol format will now be
accepted as ‘xx.x% alc./vol.’ or ‘alc xx.x% / vol’. The statement must
be 1.6mm in height and appear in the single field of vision.
|
|
NOMINAL VOLUME |
Minimum print height is 3.2mm in Canada and the statement
must appear in the single field of vision. |
|
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN |
The country of origin must be stated in both English and
French. Acceptable formats include; ‘Product of Australia, Produit
d’Australie’, ‘Wine of Australia, Vin d’Australie’. The statement must
appear in the single field of vision. Minimum print height is 1.6mm.

COMMON NAME |
The name by which the beverage is commonly known must
appear in the single field of vision in both English and French.
Acceptable wording includes; ‘red wine, vin rouge’, ‘white wine, vin
blanc’, ‘sparkling wine, vin mousseux’. |
|
NAME & ADDRESS |
The label must include the producer’s/dealer’s name and
address and/or the importer’s name and address. Importers details must
be preceded by the words ‘Imported by/Importé par’. Producer’s details
should be preceded by ‘Produced by/produit par’. |
|
ALLERGENS |
Wine is exempt from allergens labelling. Sulphite
labelling is optional for wine but is encouraged. |
